What Should You Wear For Fall Photos?

Fall weather is just around the corner, so let’s talk about six things that will help you pick an outfit for your fall photo session. This advice could be applied to couples, families, or seniors. And, shameless plug: this is also your opportunity to start thinking about signing up for my fall mini sessions that will be happening in October!

  1. LOOK THOROUGHLY AT YOUR CLOSET. You don’t need to buy several new outfits for your session but do look carefully at your closet. Examine clothes for any stains, snags, loose buttons, and tears. If you love a piece but the fit isn’t perfect, consider getting it tailored which could make all the difference.

  2. THINK IN LAYERS. With fall comes varying temperatures. Wear outfits with layers so you can take them on and off for photos; this can change the whole look of a photo, too. Think jean jackets, cardigans, vests, leather jackets, and blazers, or even a cute beanie, mittens, or scarf!

  3. THINK ABOUT TEXTURES. Different textures, and even combining two of them, can add fun elements and dimension to your photos. I get excited just thinking about corduroy, suede, faux fur, wool, and velvet (yeah, yeah, I know that’s a little weird, but I love picking out my own outfits as well as helping others pick out their outfits for photos!).

  4. PAY ATTENTION TO COLORS AND PATTERNS. If you’re taking photos with a spouse or family, you don’t all have to match exactly (like in the ‘90s when my mom made our whole family wear denim on denim!), but coordinate outfits so they don’t clash. Lay them out side by side to get a good look. Think also about where your photoshoot is going to be to make sure outfits work with your background (e.g. in the summer, you don’t want to wear a green outfit if all of your photos are going to be among the green trees!). The good news about fall is that there are a wide variety of leaf colors, and you can easily wear a mustard or dark maroon for your photos.

  5. CHOOSE TWO (OR MAYBE THREE) OUTFITS. This is especially true for couples and engagement sessions, BUT be sure to ask your photographer how many outfits you’re allowed for your photoshoot. Assuming you are allowed more than one outfit, you will definitely want a dressier outfit and one that’s more casual. Most importantly, you still want both of these outfits to feel like you. Make sure you’re comfortable and actually like how you look in your outfit (don’t just wear an outfit that someone else thinks you look good in if you don’t really like it or you feel stiff in it!).

  6. YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH NEUTRALS. Seriously, I know neutrals can seem “boring” to some, but neutrals allow the photos to focus on you and your personality rather than your outfit. Neutrals are also timeless colors and when you print out the pictures, they can go with any decor in any home.

ONE LAST THING: DON’T HESITATE TO ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER FOR HELP OR RECOMMENDATIONS.

I mentioned this briefly above, but I love picking out outfits. I often help clients pick their outfits for photoshoots. There is no shame at all in asking for your photographers opinion, and I would honored to help you out!
