How to have a Successful Beach Photoshoot

Jacksonsville, North Carolina

It takes time to plan for getting your photos taken, and doing a beach photoshoot is no exception! Here are few tips to help make your gorgeous beach session go as smoothly as possible.

  1. Be prepared and flexible regarding the weather. Weather by the ocean can change frequently, even up to every half hour. Wear layers like a light cardigan or jean jacket so you can easily take it on and off during your photos, AND you will have something to wear while walking between different locations. Remember, go with the flow! Be flexible because it may be more windy or misty than you were hoping or expecting, but the photos can turn out just as lovely.

2. Lighting is important no matter where you are located for photos, but for a beach session where there isn’t any shade, sunrise and sunset sessions will be your best option (and I promise you won’t regret it; the photos in this post were taken at sunset and the early morning was 100% worth it!).

3. Consider how you may need to combat the humidity for your hair and makeup. Extra hairspray, bobby pins, or even wearing your hair in a cute ponytail can be quite helpful. If this is a family photoshoot, it will likely be easiest for your little ones to wear their hair up or have some barrettes. Regarding your makeup, wear waterproof makeup! Even if you don’t end up going in the water, wind or sand can cause your eyes to water thus causing your make up to run.

4. For your outfits, especially the ladies, think flowy and flirty! Dresses that flair, especially on the lower half, are great for running-around-the-beach-photos. The men can wear dress slacks, nice shorts, and a button up. You don’t have to match, just coordinate color pallets. Pastels and light colors are some of my favorite for beach sessions. Lastly, decide if you’re going to be wearing sandals or if you will be barefoot.

5. Embrace the elements! Kids are going to play in the sand, they might get sand on their clothes, you might get splashed, your dog might know you over, but you’re at the beach! Have fun, and trust your photographer to capture the moment. Let me tell your story one photo at a time.

6. BONUS TIP: Bring your dog!
