Tips on Bringing Your Dog to Your Photo Session

HELLO PUPPY!

Okay, let me just apologize in advance for greeting your dog before I say hi to you! Ooops!! And yes, this is me below snuggling with someone else’s pup after their photoshoot.

But, on a serious note, I WANT you to bring your pup to your engagement or family session. Here are some tips below that can help make your session go more smoothly.

1. TELL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER AHEAD OF TIME YOU PLAN TO BRING YOUR DOG. While I love when people bring their dogs, some photographers don’t allow dogs at sessions, so be sure to communicate ahead of time! Personally, I just want to know so I can be extra excited about your photoshoot, be as prepared as possible, and make sure the location of your photoshoot allows dogs, too.

2. GO ON A WALK BEFOREHAND. Help get some of your pup’s energy out before the session by going on a walk. If you’re able, arrive at your session location ahead of time to help your dog get used to the new scenery and smells. It’s a lot for dogs to take in, especially if they have never been apart of a photo session.

3. CONSIDER BRINGING SOMEONE WITH YOU TO BE YOUR DOG SITTER. Although I will obviously get a lot of pictures of you with your dog, if you want any without your furry friend, I will be left holding the leash + taking photos. Having someone there who knows your dog will help them relax and during the downtime, they have the option to take your dog on a walk so that you’re able to focus and take beautiful photos as a couple or family!

4. DON’T FORGET TREATS OF TOYS! Honestly, who is the goodest boi?! Well, obviously your fur-baby! Squeaky toys can help get their attention toward the camera and treats are great rewards.

5. CONSIDER COLLARS, LEASHES, AND ACCESSORIES. Having a streamlined or neutral colored collar or leash helps keep the focus on you rather than bright colors of a bulky harness. You could also consider something fun and unique like a greenery or floral collar, or (like we did at our wedding) a bandana or bow tie to match your outfits!

6. LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS AND HAVE FUN. Let’s be real. Your puppy or dog is going to run the show. Don’t stress if they aren’t perfectly behaved. I have patience, and we have time. This is an exciting, new experience for them too! And, honestly, the silly, playful photos end up being the cutest anyone. Let loose and together we will capture you and your dog’s personality!
